These systems are put every dog into the group based on what that breed was designed to do, so that you will be able to understand and predict the types of in-bred characteristics that will come along with your choice.

The breed groups are as below (though kennel clubs use different titles:

Working Dogs
TerriersHunting Dogs (Gundogs)

Utility breeds are a category of many different breeds placed into the same segment due to their non-sporting past. They have generally been bred for a specific purpose, however, these functions are widely different. Here you will see dog breeds like: Dalmations, English Bulldogs, American Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Shih Tzus and Poodles. Dogshere in this category are often among the oldest breeds known documented.
Hunting dogs are the breeds which used to be bred to be easily trained when it comes to tracking down and recovering game that’s been shot. The hunting dog group can be broken down into four sub-groups: Spaniels, Hunt/Point/Retrieve, Retrievers, and Setters. These breeds are very loyal and pleasant animals with a great all-around temperament for a pet, however, they do need a great deal of attention and exercise.

Toy dogs are included in this group because of their small size. They areconsidered the human comrades of the canine world. Examples of breeds here indlude: Papillions, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Chihuahuas, Poodles, Pekingeses, Pugs and Yorkshire Terriers. These animals are very faithful and demand lots of attention if they are to thrive in your family. These are clever breeds but be careful you do not kill them with love as feeding too much can be a problem with loving masters. It is possible for These types of dog can become over attached to one owner so ensure your dog is socialized well or separation anxiety can be a real issue.

Breeds in the terrier group are small to medium dogs whose job was to trak down rabbits and other rodents. Their diminutive statue enabled them to get into the areas were their quarry went. Again these tend to be old breeds of dog that can be followed back hundreds of years and include: Miniature Schnauzer, Jack Russell, West Highland White, Boston, Welsh, Wire Fox, Staffordshire, Cairn, Scottish, and Border. Terriers are very gutsy for their small stature, loyal and tenacious. They need introducing into a home which has young children carefully as they are often defensive toward those they view as the pack leader exluding other people in the family.

Hounds were used for hunting because of their keen senses of smell or sight. Commonly, they are been sectioned into scent hounds and sight hounds. Included here are: Beagles, Daschunds, Basset Hounds, Greyhounds and Whippets. These breeds need substantial amounts of exercise, but make terrific pets for a family.

The Working dog has been designed for rescuing, guarding and searching. Example breeds in this group are: Boxers, Corgis, Great Danes, Dobermanns, German Shepherds, Collies, and Rottweillers. Often referred to as the “champions” of the dog world, being adapted to succeed in their specialized task.
